Lots of rules of thumb, depends who you listen to.  On the solo transpac boat the beam bury is 550mm for 8m beams.  This is 1 in 15.4.  Less bury than this and the shear loads in the beam become too high, and require much more material.  Anything less than about 10:1 and I would talk to an engineer about the mast rather than just use beam theory.
 
On Elementarry it is 750mm bury for a 7.5m mast.

On an unstayed rig, is there a rule of thumb on how much bury you need for a given length of mast?
I read on this page:
that "The minimum "immersion" of mast into cabin is about 1 in 7 ie a 35' high mast needs 5' of bury."  Do you really need that much?  What's the bury on elementarry?
