So the hinge could be above the bearings instead of below it.
That looks a bit more effective than the sleeve.
This is where the wheel problem comes in to the equation though.

Those are the ones I made and tested which formed the basis for the
new ones on Blind Date, except that BD's are liftable and wheel
steered. They do not have a hinge in the shaft. The shaft bearings
are located between the ply plates so the rudder kicks up at any
angle.

There are no rudders with the hinge in the shaft sailing yet. I have
built a set for my harriette, as has Doug for his, both of which are
very strong and work on the bench. The prototype production boat in
China also has them.
