A balanced lug still doesn't get the height to catch the wind, and it means a spar hanging up in the air. I suspect it would make it more difficult to have a free standing mast without getting pretty heavy as the loads are concentrated. 60' is a pretty tall bit of stick for such a light boat. A Gunter rig could handle an extra 15' reasonably easily,
