G'day,

No new news on Aroha.  Not for lack of trying, I have sent emails and a significant part of the sailing population of NZ looking  for them.

Aroha is demountable, the beams have tapered ends.  Not sure whether this beefs up the hull or not.  There are a couple of 12's under construction, but progress on them is not rapid.  They are both cedar/glass.

The Aroha problem was the hull flexing due to there not being a full bulkhead under the beam.  The fix I advised was to put the full bulkhead in.  I am not sure whether this was done, and short of going over and doing it myself, there was no more I could do.

A comparison with an F32 is difficult as I have not seen or sailed on one.  I presume they are to Ian's usual high standard and will be as good or better than any other tri of the same length/cost.

The F32 will probably point higher (depending on the harry rig), will be quicker downwind in some conditions because of the extras it carries, although this will be negated if you are sailing as a family or shorthanded.  If the F32 is folding, it will fit in a smaller marina slip.

The harry will be cheaper, lighter, safer, quicker and easier to build and sail.  It will look different and have lower resale value, although you will probably lose less actual money on the harry due to the lower original cost.

If you have any specific reasons for choosing the F32 and want to compare them with harrys, or any specific reasons for not wanting a harry, let me know and I will try to explain my point of view.    You could also ask Ian the same question, be interesting to hear his comments.

regards,

Rob

Hello Rob,

Any more news on Arora ?

Was Arora built as a demountable or were beams fixed in place and would this contribute to hull flexing problem ?

Are beams on 12 M Harry tapered on end, if not would this help to make them tighter in sockets and stiffen up boat?

Are there any other 12 M Harry's currently under construction, if so how are they being constructed.(material and construction method)?

You said Arora had problem that was fixed but you were "not involved" in fix, as the designer why would you not be involved ? I would think that since it is your design and reputation at stake you would be most involves !

I am considering building a 12 M Harry or possibly a F-32, How would you compare the Harry to the F-32 Advantages and disadvantages ? What conditions would the Harry be faster and what conditions may it be slower ? I know this may be hard for you to be objective.

Happy sailing,
