yeah, I don't know what it is about aluminium, but if you sand it and then put the resin on later it already started oxidising a layer on the surface so the bond ain't so good.
you get a bit of a slurry, which is OK just adds a bit of high strength filler.
So you can glass alumiium to join stuff or splice a mast, though it is a good trick if you can get something into the inside of the mast as well as the outside.
