Hello Rudolf,
Can the new rudders be retracted at all or are they at a fixed
depth ? How much draft will you have with rudders installed
?
Happy sailing,

Hi Doug,
The blocks are UHMPE plastic
with 153mm holes machined for self aligning Jefa rudder
bearings.
I suppose rudders this size get stuck at
higher speed when a tube bearing would be used.
On the original rudders we noticed lots
of parts twisting and bending, and steering got sticky.

Rudolf

hey rudy,
thanks yeah i see it now, that's good.
what is the plastic? solid slippery smooth plastic
machined or just drilled by drill press?
the smaller boats would simply bear directly to the
tubein which is the top of the shaft.
Or is there no tube because it could bear shaft to
plastic block.
Well as usual, my bearings are tight and stuck mast , so
bit more work there.
See
Doug

Hi,
If you mean the space between
the cheeks of the rudder box,
that is where the black plastic
blocks holding the bearings go (see last
photo).
Through the cheeks and the
bearing blocks a sheer pin is holding things in
place.
So there are two sheer pins
taking turns acting as pivot or sheer pin depending on the
direction of the boat.

Rudolf

Hi
George,
I never found the 270
degree rotation limiting.
With the original
design you could see the rudders very well, so it
was hard not to notice which way to turn in a
shunt.
On Arttu's boat with
in-hull rudders I screwed up when I 'shunted'
under engine power.
Only the rudder
shaft is visible there, and dispite the fact
there is a clear mark showing the front of the
rudder I managed to
turn one rudder the
wrong way. But I must say that this wouldn't be a
decisive matter for me in choosing a type of
rudder.
You can get used to
lots of things and shunting does take some time to
become a natural action.
Hopefully we will get
BD in the water by August and see how these new
rudders work.
Regards,
Rudolf

Hello Rudolf.
Was the limited rotation of the original
rudders a problem and did it contribute to your
decision to go to the new design ? Do you
get used to the 270 degree rotation or is it
something you have to remember to rotate ruder
in correct direction each time you shunt ?
How soon do you expect to complete the new
rudder system and get boat back in watter for
testing ?
Any additional pictures you post as
progress continues will be greatly
appreciated.
Good luck with your project and Happy
sailing,
