Hi,
The original steering lines will move the rack and
so rotate the rudder.
Both bearings in the black plastic bearing
blocks are kept in place by sheer pins.
For this purpose we have ss reinforcements
laminated in the cheeks of the rudder box.
So when the rudder hits something it will kick
up around the upper pin when it is the aft rudder.
The front rudder will kick up around the lower pin.
This means the pinion will disengage from the rack,
and the wheel doesn't control the rudder any more.
In very shallow water (less than 70cm ) the pin
would have to be removed to kick up the rudder and steer
with an emergency tiller.
BTW, the binnacle is the steering pedestal with
both wheels.
Hope this clarifies, more questions please
ask.
Regards,
Rudolf
