I've started building the latest version of Solitary for solo racing
and family weekending. 15m lee hull, 6m ww hull with 2 double bunks
and small cockpit. For family use, one double will be made into a
single plus storage. May also have to put in an enclosed toilet. 3
piece lee hull for trailer/container, telescoping (18-9m) wing mast
with 60 sq m mainsail only rig.

The hulls are foam and glass so it will be a bit heavier than it could
have been. There is a slim hope that ISAF will alter their anti proa
rules and it will be allowed to race in Classe 50 multihull races,
starting with the Route de Rhum next year, and Classe 50 require glass
hulls.

Build method is almost all flat panels, infused by Brad Moran on the
Gold Coast (Aus). Not as cheap as building a table and doing them
myself, but I have no shed and only 20 hours a week for boat building.
It was also very beneficial to see state of the art infusion and see
the differences with the original KSS built Solitarry infusion.

There are 3 panels for the ww hull, 1 for the lee hull (which gets cut
into 3 pieces after the hull is built), 3 for each mast and one for
the beam. The beam is a maybe as we are still investigating options.
We are hopeful that the tow for the rudders and rig can also be
infused. The first ww hull panel is complete and the second is
curing. Both look great. I hope to have all three stuck together
next week. Pictures and weights (2 of us lifted the hull panel
easily, about 45 kgs) when i remember to take scales and camera.

Materials cost in aussie dollars for the two hulls is foam: $1,500,
glass: $700, resin (vinylester): $900 , total $3,100, plus a few
litres of epoxy, and maybe some varnish as it will be clear finished.
Materials for the infusion and bagging (peel ply, transfer material
and vac bag, some of which will be left over) are $700, plus $100 per
panel for tacky tape, release wax, table use, bits and pieces. Brad's
labour rate is $60 per hour (panels take 4-8 hours each to set up and
infuse). My time fitting out the panels is on top of this.

I will post regular(ish) updates and photos here and on the new blog
page on www.harryproa.com wen it is up and running.

regards,

Rob
