I think I agree in general with your precis. I don't know if in-hull is necessarily the way to go. Kick up gets very difficult and partial retraction also. I also don't necessarily see that much difference in drag, especially with rudders retracted, as the slot can cause heaps and a retracted edge mounted rudder only cause resistance when plowing through a wave. The edge mounted rudders on the minibeam design are a well above the waterline when kicked up
I tend to think that a leeboard and smaller rudders at about Rare Bird distance apart are a fair compromise.
