Dead right about the add ons, and the need for a decent finish if it is not for personal use.  The next easy rig I build will not have the barbs.  The boom will be held rigidly by the mast so it can't rock.  Will still need a collar above the boom, but this is easier than the barbs.

Sailtrack is now integral on all the masts.  Easiest on a wing mast, but not too difficult on a tube.

Una rig booms are self vanging, so the max/design loads are the same as for the easy rig.  Both types can be made from a single panel.

Swing wing can be made from cheap/heavy materials and still work, which is a big plus.  To get it the same weight/efficiency as the ballestron, would probably take a similar amount of time, and cost.

I could be wrong, I have not built, or seen a swing rig, although the full wing sail rig I built for the first harry was similar.  I scrapped it due to the difficulty of keeping the leading edge straight(ish) in strong breezes.  Not sure if this is a problem or not, but it certainly looked pretty inefficient.   Hopefully someone will build a swing wing on a performance hull and we can see how it compares.

Arto,
Unless the cabin was full width, I would go with a schooner as the biplane takes too much space out of the ww hull.  Famous cat sailor etc is still a secret, will let you know when/if this changes.

oceanplodder,
If I can build it, then it will be very suitable for amateurs!  Should know in a month or so.  Mast needs a vac bag and full length table, which may or may not be a problem.  The sail will be a lot cheaper as low cost sailcloth can be used.

Hi Rob,

You're probably right on building time for bare tube, thing is all the add ons. Like the barbs keeping the boom in place , sailtrack (which was also homemade), hounds, padding for the halyards leads and so on.
And everything has to finished to an exeptable level (well, at least most people do ;)).
Remember this is about comparing an easyrig to others. So we're talking about a balestron boom. An una rig boom would be lighter loaded so less material, and definitely much smaller.
With the swing wing all the extra stuff like the wishbones on the mast are lightly loaded. So it't just a matter of laminating a couple of layers of wood around a simple jig.
I suspect the swing wing would be (much) cheaper to build.
The masts on the Tiki 30 are tapered, hollow wood.

regards, Rudolf
