Clearly there was a problem in that the red spiral tubing was added rather than the foam. If the spiral tubing was of the right density and friction it should last well without making too much clatter and take the shock out of sudden changes in direction.

I still think you need a hinge as I can't see a flexible batten really taking up the shape properly, but I don't necessarily think the curve for the aft section can't be done with well tuned battens.
I can't see why the hinge can't be made as strong as necessary.

I can see potential problems with shunting in keeping all those lines under control but wondered if they could somehow be stiffened to ww for the working lines to avoid flapping around
