Answer to your otherpost when n=my egio gets back toi earth.

Between the planks, the lightest filler you can get/afford.  It only has to be as strong as the cross grain strength of the wood, and because of the glass on each side, not even this strong. Mostly it is there to stop water runni9ng along the planks if you are holed.

For fairing, again as light and cheap as you can afford.  Talc, Q cells (glass balloons), microballoons and Featherlite are in order of cost and weight.  The lighter they are the easier they are to fair.  Buy in bulk, it is way cheaper and you will use a lot more than you imagine.

Fair the planking and you shouldn't need any bog before the glass, but if you do, it can be put on before or after.  After the glass, fair the hull.  Easiest is to squeegee a layer of bog onto the green glass, then trowel it with a notched trowel.  Notch size dependant on fairness, but one notch every 70mms is about right.  Then sand the notches with atorture board.  The longer, the better.  Sand one area 10 times in each direction (hold the board horizontal and move it up and down at 45 degrees), then move on by half the area and repeat.  Keep going round the hull until you have removed the bog in an area.  The rest of the hull should be fair to this.  Then fill between the bog strips with the same density filler as you used for the strips.

Should not need any resin on the hull before glassing, but if the wood is knotty, you may get some dry areas which you will see through the glass.  Add a bit more resin.  Make sure you glass while the day is cooling or you will get air bubbles all over it.

Bondo is ok for small jobs, but will crack off on larger areas.

Many people use these terms, and doing search gets plenty of hits... but no definitions.  I've got some fabrication questions.  Please help...

  1. I'm stipping up the hull.  According to the scantling, it says I'm to fill the opening gaps between strips with Epoxy Grout.  Is that simply epoxy mixed with say... saw dust, micro balloons or something else?
  2. And to fair the hull, Bog is mentioned.  Because its pink, I'm taking a wild guess that is Bondo used on car bodies.  Is that right or is it something else?
  3. It would seem prudent to sand the hull as fair as possible before applying the cloth/epoxy layers.  I note in all the photos, that you are applying the bog on top of the cloth/epoxy.  Any particular reason for not doing it between the wood and cloth/epoxy?  Does it make a weak bonding surface or something?
  4. For strip planking a small kayak, I needed to do 3 coats of epoxy on the wood before applying the cloth.  Is that still the recommended method for something this large?

Thanks,

Dennis
