Good lateral thnking, but point loads are probably too high.  Plus the loads are high and the speed is slow, so plain bearings will do the job.  Delrin balls from Mcmaster Carr spread the load better if you want a ball bearing race.

I think they will be too highly loaded in this case.  They show taking the load of a small fraction of the sail.  For small loads they sound like a good idea.  However, in this case (mast bearings) they'd be taking the entire load of the sail.  And just estimating here... since the COE is ~8 ft up and the bury is about ~2 ft, They'll actually be taking about 4 times that load... so for round estimates... about 2000 lbs before a safety factor.

So far there haven't been enough bad ideas, so here goes. What about parrel beads. set them up on a lot of little bogged studs, and you have a roller bearing:
