Waterspout is the word. We have them on hot summers. And it was the only one I wasn't involved personally, it was my father single-handing. Immediate u-turn and full throttle away was the solution.

Arto are you thinking of a water spout? we get these in Miami a lot - I have only seeing one while sailing my CAL39 - and it was very intimidating - a Uturn was my best evasive motion at the time
