They are sometimes wider at the bottom than the top, so there is plenty of submerged buoyancy, but less unsubmerged to allow them to go through waves rather than pitching.  Also helps to not meet all the wave face at the same time, which is what happens with conventional raked bows.  Also a slight windage gain, but a length loss when the bow is buried.  How big are the gains?  Not very, particularly for cruising boats, imo.   We may end up with one on the 15m as it makes the bows easier to shape using flat panels.
