i stand corrected! in the FAQ it explains that a windvane is fine for those cruising multis which rarely exceed 15-6 knots, but not for racing multis capable of 20-25 kts and lots of acceleration:

they mumble sth about apparent wind going to zero, but that would mean you're sailing pretty deep, which is not the fastest way to go downwind.
i imagine if i were going more than 15 kts i'd want to be manually helming, but i'm still curious what the problem is with windvanes at those speeds.
