I couldn't really say what was happening when I had my two masts on sidecar.
I thought it went pretty well after I had got the booms rotated to the wing and better battens, I had fairly triangular leeches though, so you would have a gap of nothing at the boom height upto about 2m at the mast tops.
I didn't seem to feel like the aft mast made as much difference to your speed/power like tending to support the single main idea.
But the lower centre of effort of two sails and the beams linked to masts ideas are the counter arguments.

No, but as non overlapping jibs work, then the front boom just about touching the aft mast and the sail as straight leeched as possible would be a good place to start.  Unfortunately on El the masts were a bit bendy which meant the slot was pretty wide from half way up the mast.  see http://harryproa.com/Elementarry/SailingPhotos_4.htm
