Good question.  General consensus was that it was from the bottom of the rudder, but how (if?) air got into it, I have no idea.  Other possibility is that it was from the top of the rudder and air was sucked down the tube, but I think this would have been turbulence rather than the very neat vortex.  Or a rope, but it looked just like a vortex.  It was amazing how long and perfectly formed it was.   I guess the trick next time would be to waggle the rudder and see what happens to it.

how is it generated? Seems to come from the front rudder. Does it suck air through the rudder stock? Canīt be cavitation at the rudder tip - or can it? It seems not to be a trailing piece of rope dragged along by the rudder :-)
