We can regenerate with the system we have but it is not something we have tested yet.  

To go above 4kW on 48V with a brushless system gets expensive.  Motors are 3 to 4 times what the ME1003 cost.  There is also the added complexity of the controller and if it dies there is no contingency plan unless you carry spare controllers.  

We will see if the brushes become a maintenance issue.  It is primarily a sailing boat.  The motors give it the ability to get in and out of tight spots.  Use should be quite limited unless there are a stack of solar panels and even then the motors will not be working hard.
