G'day,

Conventional through hull spade rudders work as well on proas as they do on other multis and monos.  To me, this is nowhere near good enough.  I want rudders that kick up in a collision and can be raised and lowered.  As it has to happen in both directions, this is more difficult on a proa than a one way boat.  I also dislike daggerboards, for the same reasons.  They are a disaster waiting to happen in a grounding.  They are also a lot of work and take up a lot of interior space.

My solution is over sized rudders mounted at about 25% and 75% of the lee hull length which do double duty as boards and rudders. They are mounted on the inboard side of the lee hull or on the beams.    Both have worked well and meet the above requirements.  Recent developments involve 2 way foil shapes which work in both directions.  This saves considerable space as the blades do not need to rotate through 180 degrees so the steering (tillers or wheels) only have to turn through 30 degrees.

regards,

rob

I have seen a lot of discussion about rudders and there seems (to me) no real concensus on the best setup for any proa. Is this uncharted territory or is there some generally accepted rudder setup for proas?
