No current - the 18m proa should be capable of getting boat speed above windspeed.

The 18m proa has a sail area of 80sq.m and a build weight of 4t.  It has gained some weight from the as-built - as-built SA/D^(2/3) around 30.  That puts it in the radical racer category.

With this sail area and displacement you would expect to achieve windspeed.  We have been close before but never quite got there.

The new rudders are smaller than original so less drag there and the hulls were water blasted just prior to Christmas on reasonably new anti foul that has started to ablate nicely.  It is still not as smooth as a "mirror finish" but better than the 40grit roughness or equivalent fouling it previously suffered.

With the new lower aspect rudders alone there was some loss of pointing ability compared with the original high aspect rudders but the dagger board is better than the original rudders.  The board is swung up once sailing off the wind.  It just adds drag for no benefit once true wind is greater than 70 degrees.

Rick mentioned on the web site blog that "On a reach with the board up we managed boat speed above windspeed.  That was coming back in 5 to 6knots of wind doing 6.5 to 7 knots through the water."

That would be surprising for that boat unless there is a current, wouldn't it?
