Up to 15kts or so of true wind the 18m proa makes better VMG downwind at about 140-150 to true wind when hulls are clean.  The apparent wind is still forward of the beam so sail efficiency still counts.


Keeping the wind ahead of the beam and hulls diagonal to waves provides a more controlled and pleasant motion than running dead downwind.  

As windspeed increases the wind will come further aft but by that stage I would be thinking about reducing sail.
