I just bought ($40 on Kindle) Blondie Hassler’s book
on junk rigs. It was very interesting and in depth. There was a lot
of geometry type aspects to these rigs that the book addresses very well.
It was written about 20 years ago though, and I will be getting into the Junk
Rig associations web site to see what new developments there are. One
thing I did think of while reading the book was there is a lot of opportunity
for chafe of the various parts as they rotate against the mast. I was
wondering if anyone has researched using a rotating carbon mast with this type
of rig. You could have a fixed boom and the upper yard would stay mostly
fixed in rotation (it still has to go up and down the mast so it can’t be
totally fixed). They also don’t mention in the book the cambering
that is being built into the junk sails by people doing it today. I’m
just curious about this rig and am just beginning to research it.
Thanks,
Jerry Barth
