The additional mast replaces the standard 6m top section.  The bend characteristics would be calculated accordingly.

The decision would be made on the beach.  If the wind increased, you would need to reef and the top mast becomes drag, albeit not much as it is only about 100mm/4" diameter.

The 18m mast is engineered to bend to a certain degree for a certain wind force. How does that work out when to this mast is shoven an extension mast for an additional 8-10 m? Is the wind force not to the square and bending force linear? This choice would need to be made on the hard before the start of the race, right?
