Luc,

I've got to say that I can't quite get used to the Wantoo system on a sleek proa.  It's very well designed, and it accomplishes its goals, but I'd rather have an open deck with fewer protrusions.

But to each his own.  If you want the safety railing and stanchions, Wantoo is great.

For the sake of discussion (assuming you'd still want the rails for your own boat), what do you think about the following:

    - A center jackline running from the cockpit to the mast.  You should be able to do everything you need to do while on the water with a two meter expanding tether, and with the jackline where it is, you're not going to be able to go too far if you do fall off the tramp.

    - Netting outside the beams.  I've been thinking about some open 2" dyneema netting outside the beams, running from the last solid point (not the foam ends) of the ww hull to the same point on the lw hull.  You could use fishing net instead of trampoline material, and with an open area around 90%, it shouldn't cause much resistance to wind or breaking waves.  I don't think it would be particularly comfortable to lie on, but it would be easy to see through, and it should catch anyone who wants to do gymnastic tricks on the beams.

If you had both a jackline and the netting, it would be pretty darn hard to leave the boat unintentionally.

Rapscallion, Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but keep in mind that Nol extends a very long Dutch tradition of small sailing boats. He blends very well their typical silhouettes and modern technology.

The Wantoo folding beam mechanism is innovative and makes a lot of engineering sense if one commits to a folding proa. This is more challenging than folding a tri, but could be easier than folding a cat. It may not be easy to give it a spiffy look but I doubt the windage of its tube lattice is worse than cat2fold or single tube beams if one considers that for safety railing & stanchions should not be "forgotten" as is done all too often. Offering a choice of Wantoo folding and fixed beams is possible, but I doubt it is worth the serious extra trouble to engineer the end rotating fixation points to be readily removable.
