One little item that doesn't seem to get mentioned in comparing stayed to freestanding wing masts is that each stay generates much more drag than would be expected, more drag than an airfoil shaped mast.


Then when you add wind, waves and rotating the boat, the instantaneous forces on the mast and stays can be horrendous. Not to mention the compression loads on the boat.

Peak load on an unstayed wing mast will be orders of magnitude less than a stayed mast.

Typically though, sailors want their rigging to support those forces because that is where the power comes from to go faster : )
