Since that time we have done a little more experimenting and found a way to get out of irons without shunting.  It is no quicker but less work for two old men.

When in irons, centre the trailing rudder.  Bring the leading rudder perpendicular pointing leeward.  Release the boom sheet to feather the rig.  This can shift the lateral resistance far enough aft to overcome the drag from the ww hull.  In a minute or two the boat will be far enough off the wind to sheet in and take off.
