What kind of accommodation is it you need? Extra cabin? Bigger saloon? Different layout? Something else? If I needed extra cabin I would go with schooner rig and flare the lee hull between the beams to make room for the extra cabin. Bigger saloon... doable if may be not advisable. Different layout or something else... let us hear what you need.

Motoring: I wouldn't have the motors at the stern. Less prop ventilation and better weight distribution if the motors are near the CoG. Two motors should give good handling. If you want more power put on bigger outboard or even better but more complex and more expensive option is to have inboard with retractable prop shaft like this http://www.mcconaghyboats.com/propulsion.html .

I wouldn't worry about the anchoring. I've been once onboard a Visionarry and the anchoring system seemed much more user friendly than the typical monohull system. No need to go to the bows and better weight distribution. Much better on a harryproa for those two reasons alone. Also there is more space around the anchor winch than on monohull bow. You can have the anchors on both ends of the bridge.

Luc, - "Talador, That is a tall order. To start out with. What don't you like about the Luca Antara, the only 20m HP close to ready for cruising? Luc"

I tried to bring it up, but they are working on the site.  So from memory, the accommodations aren't big enough (read that as extra weight).  I am currently on a Hunter Legend 45 which has better accommodations, and anytime I feel like it I can take down the sails and turn on the 65 hp motor to get out of Dodge at 7 knots. The boat rests at anchor very nicely and handles 25 knot winds and 2 to 3 m seas with no problem, but it drafts 5'6" and the rudder is the same depth as the keel : (

I haven't seen a proa sailing with a schooner rig set up, so I am a little cautious.   I don't like always being exposed to the elements as I am sailing either. I have yet to see an anchoring system on a proa I like.  I think two anchors, one aft and one forward on a proa would be nice : ) I don't like the engine solutions I have seen either. I am not a good enough sailer and tactician, nor patient enough to sail everywhere.

A BiPlane seems to overcome most of those 'problems', large accommodations, engines, anchoring, etc. I just have to figure out stuff like kick up rudders at the stern with HP style raisable rudders up front, what engine arrangement?  Because I can't have kick up rudders and stern mounted outboards.

Life is good.
