It may put downward pressure on cell prices from other suppliers; although the difference is not great for cells alone.  Cells for a 50V 5kWh battery cost USD2200:

The Tesla 7kWh wall mounted unit is being pitched at USD3000.

In its present form you would be paying for neat packaging meant for wall mounting with small cells configured for high voltage.  Therefore it would not be the first choice for mounting in a boat.  Individual large format cells can be oriented and configured in a variety of ways to suit available space and suit low voltage application.

Extra low voltage DC is anything below 60V.  That is regarded as low risk of electrical shock although you can get a good boot breaking an inductive circuit.

I have seen forecasts that wholesale prices of lithium batteries will be down to USD200/kWh within 5 years.  About half of where they are now.  They are already good value compared with lead/acid so at half the price I expect lead/acid will disappear.

We seem to have a number of battery experts in this forum. I was wondering if any of them had looked into the new Tesla battery announcement athttp://www.teslamotors.com/powerwall. Does it look promising for boats?
