Rick, "The dash speed is an emergency measure to provide absolute max power and it is generally held in the market to be 30 knots submerged for a complete exhaustion of the battery (which is massive) in one hour. This speed is higher than that of surface vessels pursuing the boat as they cannot use underwater detection equipment at such high speed."

A nuclear attack sub is the only vessel able to keep up with a nuclear carrier (depending on sea state). So they can go a lot faster than 30 knots. Makes one wonder how fast a battery powered sub can go, at a quarter of the wave drag.

And another bit of trivia to add to yours : )  When they shoot something with a torpedo, they aim to have it explode underneath the vessel, letting the vessel fall into the newly formed hole and crumple like a tin can.
