Gardner, - "I brought a maine cat 30 from Maine to the Bahamas down the intracoastal. 2 outboards, which was nice for docking, but I only ever ran one at a time. Motoring at 4-5 knots is fine because I only want to do it when the wind is non-existant or directly in front and not too strong."
For going down the ICW that is fine and I think outboards may be the solution too. I have a love hate relationship with the ICW though.
If you like outboards and I do, where to mount them? The sled idea probably works great in calm conditions, but keeping the prop a foot under the waterline while going through 3 foot waves seems tough. Every time I go through an inlet on the ICW I carefully check the current direction and wind. They can be very nasty. Except for putting a sail up for stability, I hardly ever see anyone sailing an inlet.
I am in Jacksonville, Florida right now. Just got back from a little trip up to Cumberland and Amelia Islands, 6 to 9 foot seas on the outside.
