RobRiley, - "Im sure it is all helped by thinking the whole construction through in the beginning. I have heard of yards that build the interior first, then assemble the boat around it, likewise there are caravan manufacturers that operate the same. Perhaps thats not completely conducive to HP's build regime, but they are interesting things to ponder."

Yes that is the trick.  I have built a couple of airplanes, the first took me more than 5 years to build and the last took less than 3 months (and I did a better job). Knowing what you are doing and just putting everything together is incredibly faster.

The last thing you should build on a (plane) boat is the hull and doing everything possible to prefinish everything so that no sanding is required is huge.....

The only reason for doing the hull first is if money is the issue. And even if that is the case, the time is better spent acquiring the expensive bits cheaply first.

What totally destroys any schedule or budget is changes or improvements. What happens in airplanes and I have seen it time after time, is that the builder gets a kit and builds the fuselage and wings and then decides what engine, prop and electronics to put in it as his budget allows.  All of a sudden he starts making mods and improvements, his budget goes all to hell and the plane never gets finished or if it does it takes 10 years.

I know I sound like I am lying, but I put everything into a fuselage and wings in under two weeks.  A boat would be much faster and easier........ It takes a lot of preparation though.
