I have kayaked all of the waters up there and circumnavigated Queen Charlotte. When the wind is counter to the currents and funneled through those straits about the only way to go through them is on the ferry.
The problem is waves and wind, the winning boat is the one that has the easiest time heading into 4 foot waves and 25 knot winds.
I would carefully, carefully consider the timing and wind before going through any of those straits without an engine. The whole race is an up hill slog...
