I believe he has just taken delivery of a new batch of shafts.  Most people tend to buy a spare but none of the 50 or so shafts he has supplied have failed yet. A number of those are still unused, being purchased as spares.  They have all been set up with my designated safety factor on cyclic fatigue.

Email me when you want to go through the parts list.  The longest item is 800mm so can be easily transported.  The gearbox is usually the most expensive component.  The Mitrpak R-102 box is OK for a kayak:

Anything on Ebay needs to be compared with this.

If you are buying a kayak hull make certain it has some stability in reserve as your CoG will be a tad higher than paddling due to feet being well above the floor.  My preference for the shaft geometry on the pedalyak was to penetrate the hull with a shaft tube that met the gearbox coupling above the waterline but builder, Mark, did not want to make a hole in the hull so went with the wider offset shaft mounted above the gunwale.

Cycling in the recumbent position benefits significantly with pedal cleats particularly over long distance.  If you plan to use these then the cockpit needs to be at least 500mm wide so the pilot has room to release cleats.

Rick,

Thanks for the great reply and info.  I may well take you up on your offer of a parts list.  I live in San Antonio so I can probably pick up the shaft directly from Gary Jones.  I like the pedal yak drive.  There are a great deal of used kayaks on the St Thomas craig’s list, so it looks like that’s the way to go since out there I don’t have my full workshop of tools that I have here in Texas.  Looks like a fairly simple modification.

Thanks,

Jerry Barth
