Proaskip, "Ballast is important, a stabilizer controlled wing needs to be mass balanced around the wing pivot, trick is to keep everything light so not much ballast required.

On an aerodynamically balanced wing, mass balancing is not required (it is bad actually) to prevent flutter.  It is only required on an aileron (a weighted arm in front of the aileron) because the aileron is not aerodynamically balanced.  And on an aileron it only needs to counter the vibration harmonics if the aileron has positive control.

It makes as much sense as weighting the leading edge of a rudder.....

Proaskip, "Most interesting to me was the difficulties with the multi part wing assembly, followed by it seems that he never fully engaged the flaps.

Probably good that they didn't, the drag penalties outweigh the benefits.  Did you also notice that they said that wave action was destroying the trailing edges when the wing flexed so they had to secure it?

Proaskip, "My own experiments so far have been with the Bionic Broomstick.

Very cool, I am extremely interested in your current project.

Proaskip,"Bearings are probably fairly important, my current schooner rig under construction is still pretty basic, ball socket at top, UHMW on mast tube at bottom. Real serendipity of Atlantis's approach is the 21% thick wing, easy to make stiff and light."

Yeah they made some mistakes, but they did a lot of things right and the thick wing was one of them.

I think bearings might be the most important and hardest part of the build. I really like your ball socket idea and the Spherical Roller bearing idea from Atlantis.

Figuring out how to install and maintain buried bearings with very tight tolerances has been giving me nightmares.......

Your ball socket idea might be perfect, especially if it is accessible.

Please don't ballast your wings on your current project though : )
