"Waves become swells."  I've already discussed fetch and storm conditions though without referring to them as the obvious source of swells.  Everyone has thrown a stone into a pond and watch the disturbance propagate smoothly from the turbulent source.  Simplifying ideas has its place, but simplifying things for someone...
