If you are primarily sailing downwind, a wing doesn't make any sense period, it just doesn't have the surface area of a sail.

yes but they jibe to jibe downwind through about 90 degrees, iceboats make 2x windspeed that way so more Vmg

Maybe the reason for flaps on wings is because of racing rules limiting sail area and retracted flaps don't count as sail area?

doubt you'd get away with that
maybe for a junkers type flap, but you wont be seeing one of those on a boat any time soon
I think C class cats play around with slots up forward so it seems there might be better prospects there. Personally I think I prefer not having the complications.

Dare say the peak of the wing could use some refinement, not so sure the bluff rectangular profile is the best that can be done
