If you are primarily sailing downwind, a wing doesn't make any sense period, it just doesn't have the surface area of a sail. 

yes but they jibe to jibe downwind through about 90 degrees, iceboats make 2x windspeed that way so more Vmg

You missed the point about a wing using flaps being unable to point into the wind.  Fast boats and ice boats are a perfect example, are always pointing into the wind. Ice boats routinely sail directly down wind to the true wind faster than the true wind, but they are pointing very tightly to the apparent wind, so they bear off to make better VMG as you say.

It is all about drag......
