Which gets me to the subject of twist.  This is an essential element of depowering.  Possibly more significantly, twist is essential in dealing with increase in apparent wind angle as height above sea level and true wind speed increase.  So the 'simple' single element isn't so simple when scaled up to habitable yacht size.
