The Cruiser 60 question was not specifically related to the R2AK.  With regard to racing it is better to rotate pedalers and going continuously rather than not having enough crew to rotate.  A large boat has room for more crew and benefits from splitting the propulsion between two props and having each prop located near each hull.

There is no difference between the aerobic efficiency of upright versus recumbent for equally trained individuals - many studies prove this and it is not difficult for anyone to test by making a visit to a gym - most gyms have both recumbent and upright ergometers with HR monitors.    Highly reclined position has a distinct advantage for long duration as the body is primarily supported on the back rather than a torture wedge under the pelvis.

Any individual working at 150W needs to be well ventilated and maintain hydration.  It also helps to stay cool, which is easy when on the water by making use of water cooling.  For long duration, protection from sunburn is also a consideration.  Preferred pedal position is recumbent on an open, maybe shaded deck rather than in a hull.

I was thinking though for the race three people are needed to go 24 hours a day. An upright cyclist can produce almost double the sustained wattage that a recumbent cyclist does (for a couple of hours anyway). The advantage of the recumbent position is the reduced drag.

It seems to me that if the pedals were placed at the bottom of the hull, the peddler could be upright with his head out of the hatch, and one of the three 'resting' racers could always be pedaling and maybe steering the boat at the same time.

2 knots continuous is better than 3 knots half the time.
