Very little difference in aerobic efficiency.  Majority of people are more comfortable using legs for motive power rather than arms.  That said an experienced paddler will develop their upper body.  Could be similar for a winch grinder.  

Not many people would think about running a marathon on their hands though.  To me pedalling is more natural than paddling.  I can sustain about 30% of the power from my arms compared with my legs but then I have never done any regular upper body training.

how does the biomechanical efficiency of grinding a winch compare to peddling.  given the entirely-hydraulic system used by oracle in the last america's cup, i wonder whether switching to the latter would be better on boats which have crew that only grind.
