The photo also shows the original flat stem below the waterline with the first stage to remove the flat face above the waterline.  The flat nose is now much narrower but still has a flat section above the waterline.  Third effort will likely result in a near vertical stem and no flats on the nose.

Yes, but the real problem is that the bow is a wedge shape with a flat bottom.
