Sorry I didn't review what I wrote and the spell checker got me. Or at least that's my excuse ^^
I agree lightning is an inexact science, and dissipating a static charge doesn't guarantee lightning isn't going to hit.
However, except for the weight and added complexity I don't see how it can hurt and it might save a mast or a hole in a boat.
I am also half of an opinion that most of the lightning strikes just destroy electronics on insured boats. Half an opinion on that one.
