Nothing prevents flying a spinnaker.  The question is whether the added complexity, weight, cost and drag is worth it?


According to my calcs a very low drag boat with a wing should be able to travel 135˚ off the true wind at 2-3 times the true wind speed.

The boat starts on a reach with a 5 knot wind perpendicular to the beam. As the boat exceeds 5 knots it is turned away from the wind still keeping the apparent wind at around 60˚ from the bow.  The boat and apparent windspeed will keep increasing as the boat accelerates downwind maxing out at around 15 knots!

True it can't run directly downwind, but who cares?  And why bother putting up spinnaker just to go a lot slower.
