I think I can make a case for forgetting about the solar panels, batteries and inverter and just going with a small generator.
My Honda 2000 burns about 1/4 of a gallon of fuel an hour and if I run it a couple of hours a day I might burn half a gallon, $2 worth. That's 60 dollars a month, 800 dollars in a year.
With $2000 (generator, fuel, batteries, charger) I have a years worth of electricity and then it only costs $800 for the next years energy.
An equivalent solar system is going to cost around $10k (and probably needs the generator as backup). Yes it doesn't make any noise, and yes it works when the sun is shining. Invariably though, when I want the power is not when the sun is shining and it is a nice day for snorkeling. I want the power when the sun isn't shining and it is a crappy cloudy day like it can be for weeks and even months (seems like it sometimes ^^).
I end up turning on the generator, making water, charging the batteries, blah, blah, blah and wondering what good the solar panels do? Lights?
