Yes it seems impossible doesn't it : )

It can do it easily, but it is going to have a lot of drag. You have to consider that it can only happen when the drag vector is in the same general direction as lift, like a parachute. 

Also consider a kite (parasail) they are a soft sail, but can produce some pretty impressive numbers.

The real problem a soft sail has is drag and I think that is what you are intuiting.  Think of it like landing flaps on an airplane, lift goes up, drag goes up, the plane comes down.

Pulling the traveler in or tightening the jib is a lot like using flaps on an airplane and it does increase the lift a lot, But it is more efficient to keep the sails flat(ish), then they have less lift but they also have a whole lot less drag.
