Much will depend on the efficiency of the linear alternator. They were working on that. Toyota has developed a prototype of a free piston engine linear generator that has quite an impressive performance. The electronic control required seems not trivial for the engine as a system. I would suppose this vortex generator would need even more "intelligence" to reach good efficiency.
Thinking along the principle of this vortex generator I wonder if :- it would make sense to make double use of the mast as such a vortex generator when the sails are down?
- sail reefs with the rotating mast could be used to "modulate" the frequency of the vibrations to optimize for the performance of the linear alternator ?
- If one has a rotating mast already one could optimize for a mast foil to produce a more stable flutter in a preferred direction for the linear alternator ?
- a water flow vortex generator would make sense when sailing ?
- "harvesting" a designed-in flutter of a board would make double use of the board
- it would also work in reverse as an engine ? (I think there are already some silent PC cooling devices that use this principle)
