I am coming at this sailing business from a different direction, Hang gliders, Reno Air Races, aerobatic sailplanes.  I swear that more than half the sailors I have met are pilots too. It seems like the old bold pilots become sailors. . .

I think you are right, the trick is to make the bearings easily serviceable and replaceable and then regularly service and maintain them. They are definitely critical components.
