I have been lurking on the electric boat site for a number of years now but am by no means an expert. You are likely correct if the key thing for you is the 10 knot criteria.

However if you can live with half that and consider that a power boat can point exactly where it wans to go and go there in a straight line. And if as a cruiser it's more about getting there comfortable than in a hurry I think we are getting close. Short of cutting and pasting a whole bunch of posts from another site I can't  really help you with specifics other than in the last year we are seeing big strides being made in motor and controller efficiency  as well as quality in electrical storage  particularly in weight reduction.  And the cost of solar continues and will continue to decline.

My time line for cruising is 8 to 10 years and I believe it Will more than make sense within that time frame.

63urban, Could you provide an example?  All of my research indicates that solar powered propulsion (except for auxiliary) is a dead end.

Like I tried to show Rick, most of the wattage calculations that I have seen regarding electrical power seem to be off by a factor of 9.8 (gravity).

Believe me I would love to put a dozen solar panels and some batteries on the boat and cruise around forever at 5 knots.

What I am now attempting to do is use the wings for propulsion and the solar panels and batteries for the boats systems. Almost complete independence^^ and the ability to move along at 10 knots plus.
