Nick, "You will likely find that pure electric with a prop designed for electric and a diesel Genset for your race for shelter will get you there far cheaper with much less wight more power in the hole and just as much reliability."

You may very well be correct and it should give me the ability to pull the prop out of the water. With sails as my primary propulsion I don't even care how efficient it is. And I am familiar with big industrial diesel electric systems.

So the question becomes one of cost and reliability.  I can put in a brand new Yanmar 30 hp diesel complete with sail drive and prop for under $15K and 400 lbs.  The last time I checked out an electrical system the motor alone was $10k, not counting the Generator (30KW 1000 lbs. $10K,), Controller (probably have to build my own) and prop ($3.5K).

Believe me, I am watching^^  I really like the idea of the prop out of the water and have already figured out a system to do that. The problem is the Generator system weighs twice as much, puts out half the continuous hp and costs almost twice as much. . .  and the reliability is 'uncertain'.  I could probably live with everything except the lack of a proven track record.  When I turn the key I want to go. . .  generally because something bad is happening.

I am designing with the electric option in mind, but I am not all that optimistic.
